Just Find Your Niche
I’ve been taking a lot of time lately reading about how to grow my social media presence. It seems I need to gain traction in the follower department on Instagram if I ever hope to monetize my writing or sell products online. I’ve noticed a lot of these “gurus” are all part of a type of multi-level marketing scheme. They all say the same exact thing as if they were given a script to read in their videos. Many of the blog posts have the same points to them as well.
I’m starting to notice there aren’t a lot of “organic” options to grow on the platform. But regardless of whether it is from an MLM account or someone who knows all the secrets of the Instagram algorithim, they all say the same thing…
Find your niche.
What’s A Niche?
When it comes to social media, a niche is a specialty a person/profile focuses on. Accounts looking to monetize focus on healthy living, fitness, crafts, etc. And that is all you will see on their profile.
Not That Easy
If you’ve followed me long enough, you know that I have really struggled to find my niche. I’m a housewife. I honestly thought that was enough of a niche. But clearly it isn’t when it comes to social media growth. I haven’t dedicated my personal feed to just cooking or housekeeping or marriage advice. I want to talk about all of it. That makes for a little bit of chaos.
I constantly function in an organized chaos. That also means my Instagram profile isn’t aestheically pleasing either. I don’t use the exact same filter or preset on all of my photos. I don’t always use the same fonts in my graphics. I tend to go towards colors, lighting, and fonts that go with the mood of the post. But that isn’t working for me.
Buy a Bootcamp Membership or Followers?
Theres a lot of people offering bootcamps or tutorials to help people find their niche and grow their audience. Then, theres others who offer basically fake followers for a certain dollar figure. I just can’t buy followers. It’s just not cool. The tutorials and bootcamps look interesting, but I just am not sure I want to pay money for this type of thing.
I’m also worried about the community I would be putting myself in. A lot of these people seem to be part of a certain world that has vastly different worldviews than I do. I don’t want to be forced to censor myself in order to gain an audience. If I do, it would go against everything I hope to acheive in starting this blog and working towards building a community. I want to attract like-minded people so we can learn things from each other and relate to each other. Not pushing things for clout and shallower followers.
So, What is My Niche?
After several name changes for the blog and a new home for my posts, I know that my “niche” will never be what the “gurus” advise. I don’t want to create social media accounts for every aspect of my life. I also don’t want to have a personal and “business” profile. I tried that in the early days of the blog and it all felt so artificial. I felt like I was putting on a show for the sake of getting likes.
Life is full of all kinds of experiences. That is something I have always wanted to highlight in my blog. No two days are the same. We all have hobbies and skills that we want to talk about and share. This idea that our social media presence must be dedicated to only one aspect just sounds so boring.
Rolling With the Punches
Blooming where planted is my niche. Every day gives us opportunities to have new experiences. There are also things that constantly happen that are outside our control and we just have to go with it.
Now I just have to figure out how to do what I want on my account, but also play the game to gain a larger audience. If you follow me on Instagram, please be patient with me as I will be trying a lot of different things over the next few days/weeks.
If you see things you like though, please let me know! As much as I would like to figure out a way to monetize, I really just want to create a fun environment for myself and my internet friends.
